Perspectives from Black Males in Battle Creek, MI

A 2023 summer survey of Black men in Battle Creek sought more detail on these items solely from the perspective of low-income Black men, mostly with children. To engage their perspectives on economic opportunities and obstacles, an initial survey was conducted in summer of 2023.

Over 69 percent of respondents were under the age of 40 and indicated that lessons about economics came mostly from parents (43 percent of all respondents), trial and error (35 percent of all respondents),
and school (17 percent of all respondents).

The survey period was followed by several small focus group sessions with six to seven consistent participants. Repeated comments and expressions centered around where to find the information about the necessary information needed to address a specific need. Lack of access was an obstacle that was consistent for nearly every discussion topic, including any licenses or training, applications and forms,
housing, transportation, finances, and healthcare
